FAQs

  • What is the format of the Congress? Can I participate online?

The 9th APA Congress will have an online component and a face-to-face component, but it is not a hybrid event. On July 14, the activities will take place exclusively online. On July 15, 16, 17 and 18, the central activities of the congress and the parallel program will take place at the School of Management and Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, exclusively in person.

As such, the IX APA Congress will not take place in a hybrid format, so we will have exclusively online panels and exclusively face-to-face panels. If you wish to present a paper remotely, you can only do so in a panel marked “online”. The opening session of the Congress and/or the Keynote on July 16 will be broadcast online for participants registered in this format.

  • Is there a degree I need to have in order to coordinate a panel or submit a paper? Can I coordinate a panel with a colleague from the same research center?

There is no minimum grade required, so APA encourages students to submit panels or papers. All panels will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee and the papers will be evaluated by the panel coordinators and reviewed by the Scientific Committee. The two panelists can be from the same research center and/or university.

  • The congress website states that each applicant can submit only one paper to the congress. Can I present a paper as first author and join other papers as co-author?

Each applicant may submit only one paper as first author. The author of a paper may appear as a co-author on other papers as long as he/she is responsible for presenting the paper on which he/she appears as first author. The congress organizers are not responsible for overlapping schedules when a person has papers as first author on one panel and as co-author on another panel and intends to attend both. In the event of an overlap, the applicant must give priority to being present on the panel where he/she is presenting the paper as first author.

  • I'm a panel coordinator. Can I present a paper on the panel I'm coordinating and a second paper on another panel?

The coordinator of a panel may only present one paper to the congress as first author (and may co-author other papers). If the coordinator of a panel presents a paper in the panel they coordinate, they cannot present another paper as first author in another panel. If they present a paper as first author on another panel, they cannot present it on the panel they are coordinating.

  • Does the co-author of a paper have to pay the congress registration fee?

All people presenting papers at the Congress must pay a registration fee. The co-author of a paper who is not present at the congress does not have to pay a registration fee. Payment of the first author's registration fee is mandatory and guarantees that their paper will be included in the congress program and in the digital book of abstracts.

  • Do panel coordinators, co-coordinators and discussants have to pay the congress registration fee?

All panelists are subject to the registration fee regardless of their role in the congress (authors, co-authors, coordinators, co-coordinators, moderators, debaters, etc.). Only APA members have a discount on the congress registration fee. The registration fee for non-members applies to all others. Payment of the registration fee by the coordinator and co-chair is mandatory and guarantees that the respective panel will be included in the congress program and in the digital book of abstracts.

  • How many sessions can a panel have? What is the maximum and minimum number of papers for each panel?

To be viable, a panel at the 9th APA Congress must have a minimum of 3 papers and a maximum of 15 papers. The number of papers will be divided into 2-hour sessions, with each panel having between 1 and 3 sessions. Each session will therefore have between 3 and 5 papers.

  • Will the congress minutes be published?

There will be no publication of conference proceedings. The digital book of abstracts will be available on the congress website. Panel coordinators are free to compile the papers presented in their panels with a view to publishing them in themed issues of journals, books, etc.

  • To whom should requests for declarations of acceptance of communications for the purpose of applying for funding be addressed?

Requests should be sent by participants directly to the congress secretariat at the e-mail address apa2025.apantropologia@gmail.com. Requests must be submitted by the person concerned and not by a third party. These requests must include “DOCS_APA2024” in the subject line of the e-mail.

  • Does the Portuguese Anthropology Association (APA) provide any kind of financial support to cover the travel and accommodation expenses of congress participants?

The APA is a non-profit association with no external financial backers, which survives solely on membership fees and congress registrations (which finance the congresses themselves). Added to this is the fact that the membership loyalty rate is very low, i.e. few members pay dues between congresses (every 3 years). The APA is therefore unable to cover any travel and accommodation costs for congress participants. Below you will find details of some of the support or partnerships we have secured for congress participants.

  • I'm an APA member but I can't remember if my dues are up to date. How can I find out the status of my dues in order to benefit from the member discount on the Congress registration fee?

To check the status of your membership fees, please send a message requesting this information to secretariado.apantropologia@gmail.com. Given the large number of participants involved, in order to maintain our internal organization with regard to exchanges of communication with participants, we ask that requests regarding this matter be sent with the subject “QUOTA_APA2024”.

  • I'm an APA member and I'm currently studying at university. Do I get a discount on the congress registration fee?

APA members enrolled in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd cycle (bachelor's, master's and doctorate, respectively) pay the student registration fee (a 50% discount on the registration fee applies to APA members). An official proof of registration and enrollment issued by the higher education institution will be requested.

  • The congress website states that “Non-members who are members of other associations with which the APA has a reciprocal protocol will benefit from a discount on the registration fee”. Which associations have a reciprocal protocol with the APA for a reduction in the congress registration fee?

The APA has a reciprocal protocol with the Brazilian Anthropology Association (ABA), the Asociación de Antropólogos Iberoamericanos en Red (AIBR), the Asociación de Antropología del Estado Español (ASAEE), the International Commission on the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition Spain and Portugal (ICAF) and the Associação Portuguesa de Sociologia (APS). Members of the ABA, the AIBR, the ICAF and the ASAEE with up-to-date membership fees benefit from the same discount as APA members. APS members benefit from a 20% discount on the general congress registration fee for non-members. On the platform, in the registration area, you must select the reciprocity protocol you wish to activate. To benefit from the reduced registration fee, you must send a statement issued by your association proving that your membership fees are up to date. Validation of payment and registration depends on sending this proof.

  • Is there a protocol with hotels in Viana do Castelo that allows participants to enjoy discounts on local accommodation rates?

With the support of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, the APA has secured a protocol for access to university residences, which will allow congress participants to stay for less than the market price for accommodation. We will soon be publishing information on booking rooms in university residences.

Protocols will be signed with hotels in Viana do Castelo to obtain discounts for reservations made by congress participants. The list will be published here.

  • Is there a protocol with airlines that allows participants to enjoy discounts on flights?

The request to establish a protocol with TAP is underway.

  • What is the exact location of the buildings where the congress proceedings (panels, papers, plenary sessions) and parallel activities will take place?

The congress will take place mainly at the School of Management and Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo.

APA will promote events in other partner venues. The Congress website will be constantly updating both the program and the locations of the venues.
